Iceland, situated on the continental rift dividing Europe from North America has long been associated in our public perception with fishing and nasty, violent weather. But it is not the devaluation of the Icelandic crown as a consequence of the financial crisis that has brought the island into touristic focus. Reykjavik with its turbulent night-life, wellness in the blue lagoon, ponies on green vast hillsides – those were the images that attracted the visitors. But it is mostly along the coastline in the South and West that are green and fertile, the main part, however, consists of wild, rugged wasteland interspersed by volcanoes that every now and then erupt violently; and of deserts uncovered by vegetation, which causes an almost extraterrestrial look and feel; and of numerous glaciers of almost immeasurable size. Only the short period from June to September allows travelling there. It is the main part of Iceland that the book is going to present.
The landscape lets people physically feel the lonesomeness and vastness; it challenges the senses by visual impressions as well as by absolute stillness or, which is more common, by biting gales; the smell of vernal freshness contrasts sharply with ubiquitous sulfurous exhalations.
The photos of this book display Iceland´s main asset: its terrific landscape, partly untouched by civilization, meager, often hostile to any form of life, often bizarre in colors and forms; they give an insight into a fascinating world of captivating strangeness.
Michael Priebe studied photography and film at the HBK Braunschweig in Germany. Today he works as an author and a photographer.

Island, Insel im Nordatlantik, gelegen auf der Kontinentalspalte zwischen Europa und Nordamerika, wurde in unserer Wahrnehmung lange nur mit Hochseefischerei und rauem Wetter in Verbindung gebracht. Reykjavik, sein turbulenten Nachtleben, Wellness in der Blauen Lagune, Islandponys in hügeligen grünen Weiten, erscheinen als die touristisch prägenden Motive. Doch wirklich grün und fruchtbar ist Island nur entlang der Küsten zumeist im Süden und im Westen, der überwiegenden Teil jedoch ist bestimmt durch wildes schroffes Ödland, dem immer wieder auftretenden unbändigen Vulkanismus, vegetationslosen Wüsten von außerirdischer Anmutung und zahlreichen Gletschern von kaum erfahrbarer Größe. Zu bereisen ist dieser Teil der Insel nur in einem kleinen Zeitfenster von Ende Juni bis Anfang September. Es ist diese Welt, in die Sie dieses Fotobuch entführt.
Diese Landschaft macht für den Reisenden Einsamkeit, Weite und Ferne körperlich erfahrbar, fordert die Sinne durch ihren visuellen Reichtum, ihre Geräusche von grenzenloser Stille bis zum schneidenden Orkan, ihrer Gerüche von der frühlingshafter Frische der Oasen bis zum schwefligen Ausstoß der Solfatare.
Die Bilder dieses Fotobuches zeigen das größte Kapital dieser Insel und seiner Menschen – eine grandiose Naturlandschaft, die in weiten Teilen noch frei ist von Eingriffen des Menschen, karg, lebensfeindlich, oft bizarr in ihren Farben und Formen. Die Fotografien ermöglichen zusammen mit zahlreichen Luftaufnahmen Einblicke in eine lebensfeindliche Welt von betörender Fremdheit.

Michael Priebe studierte an der HBK in Braunschweig Fotografie und Film und arbeitet heute u.a. als Buchautor und Fotograf.
